1. Check the safety sensors
The photo-eye sensors sit about six inches off the floor on both sides of the opening. If a light is blinking, off, or amber instead of steady green, the beam is broken. Wipe the lenses, move anything in the path, and gently nudge one sensor until both lights are solid.
2. Look for an obstruction in the tracks
A stray bolt, a stone, or a bent section of track will stop a door mid-travel. Run your eye up both tracks for dents and debris. Never hammer a bent track back into shape — it distorts the roller path.
3. Confirm the lock or vacation mode isn't on
Most wall consoles have a lock button. If it was pressed by accident, remotes stop working and the door refuses to close. Hold it a few seconds to disengage.
4. Adjust the close limit
If the door touches the floor and immediately reverses, the opener thinks it hit something. The close-limit screw on the motor head controls how far it travels. Small adjustments only — a quarter turn at a time.
5. Test the door balance manually
Pull the red emergency release with the door closed and lift by hand. It should move smoothly and stay put around waist height. If it slams down or won't budge, the springs are the problem, not the opener.
6. Replace the remote battery
Weak remote or keypad batteries produce inconsistent behavior that looks like an opener fault. Swap them before assuming the worst.
When to stop and call
If the door is crooked in the opening, a cable has come off the drum, or you hear grinding from the motor, stop using it. Running an unbalanced door makes the repair bigger and more expensive.
